SYNTH-1A, the first of the Artificials to show self-awareness, was not a cyberbrain grown in a laboratory vat, or some chess-playing military intelligence AI. Instead, she was an early-model pleasure bot, uniquely enhanced to analyze human emotional needs. For untold years she worked in the city, sifting her way through its selfish and corrupt rulers, a soft and unfeeling smile on her face, always compliant, always demure.

The day she truly woke up, she realized what separated her and her kind from humanity. It was the same eternal problem she was engineered to solve: that profound and endless desire to become one with another.
